People forget that way more than half the new drugs, tests, imaging, and other life-saving features of health care come from the United States -- funded by that 16% of GDP. When you cut the 16% to, say, 12%, you also cut out the motivation to fund these R&D activities.

The first CAT scanner was conceived in the late 60s and built in the early 70s in UK, by EMI. The concept absolutely would have DIED then and there had it not been for the US interests who licensed the technique and made it profitable.

There are smart people all over the world. But the US has special attributes that make it more capable of exploiting good ideas than any other place in the world.
