I just met with our insurance carrier. Our health care plan is available to all our employees naturally, as well as to dependents and spouses. Because we pay a high percentage of the total costs, we have spouses migrating to our plan and with the children, those non-employees covered equal 250% more than our workforce.

I do not know what your circumstances are, but because of this additional coverage outside of our workforce and their claim experience, we are being quoted a 50% increase in premium.

It did not matter when insurance was cheap, but today, the increases are far greater than we are able to pass along. I was advised that some companies are dropping insurance coverage and simply giving the employees raises and telling them that the company no longer offers health plans. The tax benefit is lost.
