So the U.S. (the largest drug user in the world) can't do what Canada does, huh? Sure we could also force down the price of the drug, but it would have very bad results. Canada does it, and "the largest drug user in the world" still has a large enough and profitable enough drug market to keep resources flowing to new drug development. If the US does it, well we don't have an economy 10 times the size of ours to turn to, in order to get the development funded. If we also try to buy it for 80% off, than maybe neither the Canadians or Americans will be able to buy it at all. Beyond that I also have a moral problem with price controls (although that is somewhat mitigated by the fact that these products have patent protection, so the practical issue is a far bigger factor in this case).
