if you're in the field for a while, it's likely that as many as 8 out of 10 meds you write were developed already after you're out of training. Getting familiar - and comfortable - with those new meds is a complex process. You read the Medical Letter and a multitude of other sources, you buttonole specialists who have experience in using them, you listen to lectures, etc. Inter alia, you also talk to drug reps who often tend to be quite knowledgeable. I like to ask reps about the downsides of their competition's products (g). Heck, a few times I even went to internet chat rooms where people using those new meds talk about them.

In my case, haven't see salmon and pilaf for some time now, but admit to consuming a couple of Panera Bread soup&sandwiches in recent months.

I'm not saying this doesn't happen... I'm just not under the impression that it's a very big issue. I think it would be demagoguery if they outlaw it (do they outlaw politicians breaking bread with lobbyists?).... but if they do, most docs wouldn't shed tears.
