Jerry,

Although PC sales are going to improve, I think that Mr. Burke is right about the margins, at least to some extent.

From my perspective, which is biased because I work in the technology world, it seems that Mr. Burke may be underestimating the ability of companies to cut costs (and thereby still survive in cutthroat competition). That's the good news for the bullish side.

However, I don't like the action in the technology stocks. I don't like the feel of business from my work environment. ... And I must agree with Mr. Burke that Japanese competition will severely restrain margins. This means profits will stink. Where I differ with MB is that I think he is projecting the TV and DRAM disasters into PCs, which I believe is a mistake. He may be partially right, but I think he will be more wrong than right.

In spite of that, the higher volume isn't high enough to kick in new equipment demand. The semi equipment people know this. Otherwise AMAT wouldn't have done a layoff. Do you really believe they would can people for just a quarter? I think it will be closer to a year before business really turns around.
