If we smoke less and you removed it from the statistics, wouldn't our standing get worse?

You're missing the point.

Smoking and life expectancy are covariant (as are other items like miles driven and the number of motor vehicles on the road and the number of those that motorcyclists) and we know that they all affect life expectancy.

What removal of one of these items does to our "ranking" is not important. The point is that the WHO study is not a legitimate one, and has been discredited.

Probably more important is that the WHO takes into account a subjective measure of "financial fairness", which you and I would differ radically on -- you would say, I suppose, that a "financially fair" system means everyone gets health care, while I would say that it is "financially unfair" to expect ME to pay for the health care of other people who, if they chose to, could purchase their own. It is financially unfair to blame me for the bankruptcy of people who choose to spend their money on entertainment rather health insurance because they think they don't need it, while, at no time in my life, from the time I entered the work force have I failed to pay up for my insurance.

There are any number of reasons the WHO study is bogus. These are just a couple. Even if you throw out my argument as to life expectancy, you can manipulate the WHO study to get whatever result you want by merely changing the weighting factors assigned to the six or so basic metrics that were used.

It is statistically worthless and worse, misleading to those like you who simply won't bother to educate yourself.
