Several new articles on NCs available at TechWeb:
techweb.com
Search for "NC" and sort by date.

For example:
Priming for an NC Deployment

600 Network Stations to be deployed by end of year ...

Good article, but this part concerned me ...

"One operational challenge Singleton faced when considering the implementation of NCs was how to make sure the machines received their boot image from the AS/400 without having to use Prime's LAN. "We normally do that from the AS/400, but since we are implementing devices across the LAN, it could take up to 30 minutes," he said.

Singleton will solve that problem by issuing flash cards to each Prime location. A 10-megabyte PCMIA card is inserted into a "host" unit and automatically loads the AS/400's boot image into the machine. The rest of the Network Stations receive their images from the host unit. If images change, a new card can be programmed and sent to the offices via overnight mail delivery."

Why not send the boot image to the "host" via modem every night? Is it cheaper to issue flash cards? Is this a bad implementation? Doug?
