Are you kidding me? It's the media that started pushing this "blue state red state" nonsense thanks to the electoral maps. This was way back in 2000 when Al Gore won the popular vote but lost the electoral vote. Political pundits from all over were talking about the different demographics of the states Gore won, a.k.a. "blue states," vs. the states Bush won, a.k.a. "red states."
