Ending obesity isn't something I think our government should be involved in.

Seems to me that it could play a useful role. Or a semi-totalitarian one. The government was a key player in reducing the number of people who smoke. I think they deserve points for that. I'm not sanguine that they could be as effective with obesity or that they wouldn't make mistakes. Smoking is a much simpler problem. But a message from the government that obesity kills couldn't hurt. Plus, as you mentioned, stopping those things that contribute to the problem.
