No bail for man who killed daughter's boyfriend
Kim Walker, a Yorkton, Sask., father serving a life sentence for shooting to death a man he claimed was giving drugs to his daughter, has been denied bail as he waits for his appeal to be heard.
Walker, 52, was convicted in 2007 of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years.
During his widely publicized trial, the jury heard how Walker shot James Hayward, 24, in 2003.
Walker's then 16-year-old daughter, Jadah, was addicted to morphine and living with Hayward. Walker was worried his daughter's addiction was killing her and, according to a witness, he blamed Hayward.
On March 17, 2003, he went to Hayward's house where there was a confrontation and Walker shot Hayward five times.
His appeal, arguing that the judge erred in instructions to the jury, is expected to be heard this fall. Walker had been seeking release from prison, while the appeal was underway.
The latest denial on bail was heard by a judge from the Appeal Court on Wednesday. Walker appeared by video-conference from the Saskatchewan penitentiary in Prince Albert.
