Durham cop accused of stunt racing in unmarked car

A police officer is among the latest to be charged with stunt racing.

The OPP charged a cop and impounded an unmarked Durham Regional Police vehicle while conducting aerial traffic enforcement in Peterborough County.

"At approximately 5:30 p.m. (on Wednesday), an aircraft being operated by the Ontario Provincial Police were conducting aerial traffic enforcement on Hwy. 115 in Cavan Monaghan Twp. of Peterborough County," Peterborough OPP Const. Peter Leon said. "The aircraft was in this area for the purpose of measuring the speed of motor vehicles.

"A motor vehicle was observed travelling northbound at a high rate of speed and was subsequently stopped by a member of the Peterborough County OPP detachment who was participating in this road safety initiative," he said. "The vehicle was determined to be an unmarked police vehicle that was registered to the Durham Regional Police Service."

The OPP impounded the vehicle for seven days and a 34-year-old male, a 10-year vet of Durham Regional Police had his driver's licence suspended for the same period.

The officer is to appear in Peterborough Provincial Offences Court on Sept. 14.
