According to the anthropic principle aka "fine-tuning", the universe pretty much has to be as it is, including as big as it is and not much bigger and as old as it is, or life couldn't exist in it. Even the sun and earth needs to be pretty much the size it is. The anthropic principle implies life may be why the universe is the way it is. Which means living things aren't insignificant. Of course, that doesn't mean we're (on earth) the only life in the universe.
