The original settlers had no idea if they would experience abundant "fruits of this land", but the desire for "freedom from oppressive governments" was so overwhelming, they felt there was no choice but to commit to the relatively unknown new continent. That desire for freedom is still in our genes, and is being revitalized by an increasingly oppressive presence of our own government, as the politicians forget that the Constitutional contract with the people of America was intended to not only define what a government should do, but also what freedoms it should never impinge upon. The good thing that Obama has done -- albeit unintentionally -- is to remind the people of this basic truth.
