All of it SO true and it was not only an interesting read, it covered a topic that's always fascinated me since I first saw it in myself. The WSJ even quoted me once as saying the Admin job was one you could love so much you'd gladly do it for free. It's why at iHub, the Admins are the most populous employee group. I could afford to add as many as wanted the job and we felt could do it. And it's not just the "work from home whatever hours you want -- just make sure you're carrying your share of the load" thing. People love being known and respected by large communities. When WSJ did the story about me (geez, I think that was about 8 years ago!) and so many users were quoted saying such awesome things about me, I had to switch to v-neck t-shirts because I couldn't put the other kind on. We've got so many different examples of what the story discusses right here on SI and also on iHub. I think part of it, too, is that all the world really isn't a stage. But a venue like this sure is. Getting up into the limelight and also (which Dave exemplifies) simply giving back to a concept and community you love. When I asked him to test-drive the job in 04 so I could finish writing this version, he didn't want to give the keys back after the test-drive. In fact, he bought them. Put up some of his hard-earned for a piece of it and the "privilege" of having the non-paying job he knew had a real impact on the site. Well, shoot. I kinda did that too. When explaining to my daughter that we're not paupers and her college education is secure, but she needs to quit using the family debit card so much it has scorch marks, I tell her "Daddy's not just unemployed. He took a bunch of his money and paid to get a job that doesn't pay him and won't for a long time. In fact, he's still giving his job more money all the time."
