Aug. 12, 2009 (McClatchy-Tribune Regional News) -- TOKYO -- Nippon Oil Corp. and other Japanese oil wholesalers said Wednesday they will undertake demonstration experiments on recharging services for electric vehicles at gas stations.

The experiment will be conducted as a project sponsored by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, said the companies, which are planning to convert gas stations into "comprehensive energy supply stations" because an increase in electric vehicles is expected to weaken demand for gasoline.

Nippon Oil will carry out the experiment at 22 gas stations in five prefectures -- Aomori, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Okayama and Fukuoka -- starting in October, in cooperation with NEC Corp. and Nihon Unisys (NYSE:UIS) Ltd.

The test will involve 20 units of Mitsubishi Motors Corp.'s (OOTC:MMTOY) "i-MiEV" electric vehicles for free use by local people.

Japan Energy Corp. will install chargers at 12 gas stations in the Tokyo metropolitan area in October and Idemitsu Kosan Co. (OOTC:IDKOF) will install them at five stations in Kanagawa Prefecture in November.
