Thanks, Chinu, this is very interesting. I am about halfway through and have to stop, but jotted down a couple of things as I read that just stuck out for me..

The first was how a couple of countries rely on family caregiving to lessen costs for seniors. We (America) have moved far away from this idea. No one wants mom and dad living with them. (Actually, mom and dad don't want to live with their kids either). But the care of the aging population is a very serious drain- have we lost our sense of responsibility for our extended family?

France has an interesting policy that addresses the case of the woman we mentioned earlier who may no longer be able to afford cancer treatments. The more serious or chronic the illness, the less one pays, which helps to avoid destitution from illness.

Our hospital costs and doctor salaries are WAY out of line with everyone else's. And our insurance costs have doubled in the past 8 years. DOUBLED. Wow.

Malpractice costs were only a small slice of the pie that pushes our costs up, which surprised me, since we hear so much about them.

On page 30, there are a lot of survey statistics that I bet aren't valid now after all the muddying that's gone on. These statistics show that initially a majority of Americans, even conservatives:) believed in change and better coverage. No one seems particularly happy with the status quo. That should be at the heart of the debate, not be overwhelmed by this destructive crap of death panels and paranoid govt takeover.
