Okay, that works I guess - but doesn't that then mean the government gets all us old farts? And that saves money how?

I'm not certain whether you mean the existing Medicare customers or customers of a new government option plan. If you mean the latter, it's still hard to tell. I've seen at least two quite different versions--one a sort of medicaid plus (moves the income limits up); another a medicare plus (raises the rates back to doctors and hospitals a bit). If it's the latter, then there will be a lot more than "old farts" buying in. If possible, I can imagine my local boro doing so, assuming coverage is at least as good as present private plans and rates are lower. I can see my old university, if possible, doing th same. And so on.

That all saves money by lowering the healthcare costs for my local boro and for my former university. A big, big plus for both. And, the projection is that it lowers the premium growth curve.

If it ends up like the auto insurance it becomes a big joke. You buy the cheapest coverage from the cheapest provider and good luck trying to collect.

Hasn't been our experience at all. We buy from a very inexpensive place and have had better than decent experience.

One of the things I would assume would take place is that the mandate would have a content as to how much coverage is required. At the least, that would help with ER hospital costs. And lower overall rates as well.
