If you also legalized opium, cocaine and marijuana, the GDP would take off. It's absurd to harass adults who want to poison themselves with plant toxins. Plant toxins have always existed.
It's funny that Coca Cola, the most American of things, has "coca" in its name and originally included cocaine.
Now that I think about it, if it included cocaine there would be far less harm done by Coca Cola because people would drink just a little bit of it.
At present, Coca Cola is poisoning mega millions of people with nutrient-free chemistry causing obesity and the other ingredients are harmful too. It's true that sugar beats starvation, but those drinking Coca Cola are very far from starvation.
One thing Coca Cola does in its present form is pharmaceutically excellent. I discovered over decades that my migraine headaches were a function of various things such as lack of sleep, lack of hydration, low blood sugar, and brain blood vessel responses. By luck I found that when the blurry vision starts I can avoid the rest of the process = badly blurred vision, headache of much pain, vomiting from pain, unconsciousness, sleep, recovery. All I do is drink a couple of cans of Coca Cola [with sugar] Hey presto, vision comes right and away I go. I might have to have another couple of cans in an hour or so. Then get the sleep caught up with, the food intake right, the hydration back on track.
Yes, it would be better to not get the blurry vision in the first place, but Coca Cola has saved my bacon twice now; once in Geneva and once when renting a car from LAX and I couldn't see the person's face who was renting the car to me but I pretended I was fine as I needed the car - I doubted they would rent it to me if I told them I couldn't actually see much at all. Walking would have been seriously inconvenient.
My plan was to get in the car and just get it off the property so that I could sleep or whatever. But the Coca Cola worked well and off I went down towards San Diego, stopping en route for another top-up of Coca Cola.
Come to think of it, if Afghanistan was to produce opium, the USA could supply it to China which could use thousands of tons of it, and the profits would enable Afghan development and recovery from conflict. China might have to be forced to accept opium in exchange for all those US$ they have accumulated.
