JAKARTA, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Indonesia's refined tin exports were estimated at 8,778.38 tonnes in July, down 11.17 percent from 9,883.28 tonnes in July 2008, trade ministry data showed on Wednesday, due to softening demand.
But refined tin exports for the January-July period were estimated at 59,353.58 tonnes, up 5.4 percent from 56,303.42 tonnes from the same period last year.
"July exports were lower because demand for tin end-products also softened," Alberth Yusuf Tubogu, director of mineral products exports at the trade ministry said.
Nearly 74 percent of Indonesian tin exported in July was shipped to Singapore while the remainder went to Malaysia, China, Japan, the Netherlands, Taiwan, South Korea and Spain, the data showed.
The government introduced rigid export rules for tin exports in 2007 following a crackdown in tin mining and smelting in Bangka-Belitung islands, the country's main source for the metal--widely used in food packaging and to solder electronic products.
