Ted, > How do you feel about it when they deny someone an operation because it will hurt that profit?

I think the insurance companies are generally wrong to do that. Usually it points to a work culture that forces the bottom line onto their rank-n-file over customer service.

I often sound like I'm defending the insurance companies, but I'm actually aware of how they unjustly screw people over. The funny thing, though, is that this is usually the result of very thin profit margins. Customer service is often treated as an expensive "luxury" rather than a basic core value, despite what they say in words over and over again.

The bottom line is this. I'm neither in favor of supporting the status quo when it comes to insurance companies, nor am I in favor of pushing them into a corner by vilifying their profit motives. What I'm actually in favor of are policies that represent win-win-win scenarios for the government, the insurance companies, and ultimately the public welfare.
