I've seen things like gov't buildings being revamped at huge expense and then abandoned or turned over to a private entity over many years. I don't think that's anything that's particularly new.

But, what IS new is this feeling, as you just stated, the the nation is imploding. And it is a pervasive feeling. Comfortable, middle class people across the country are seeing things happen that they don't fully understand, but that they just KNOW are wrong. Different people detect different parts of the "elephant"* and they try to express their unease. What comes out is a disjointed antipathy pointed in many directions, without a common focus. The current healthcare flap is more a catalyst than a uniting issue to express what Jimmy Carter called a "general malaise." Except this time, those of us who are more prone to sit in a lawn chair and complain about things at the neighborhood barbecue, are making homemade signs and joining others in the futile hope that SOMEONE will listen.

At least when the Soviet Union collapsed, everyone knew it was happening. I worry that our collapse (or implosion, if you will) will happen before any of us even know what just happened to us.

*from the old story of the blind men describing an elephant, one saying it is like a snake, another a wall, another a tree trunk, etc.
