I was a great reader too, using the library a lot and also delving into the books my parents had accumulated. We had a Chambers encyclopedia, but my approach was stochastic - I'd grab a volume at random and open it anywhere, looking for something interesting. My parents were not keen about TV, and were late in getting a set. When colour technology arrived my father said TV was bullshit and colour TV was bullshit squared.

Now I have Sky and often watch bullshit - for sociological reasons, of course.
