I'm not sure Mary Jo Kopecne would agree. Can a person be a "great" man, yet at the same time, not make an effort to save the innocent life of a young woman whom you put in peril?

We could argue about his political "accomplishments" -- obviously, he has been a very destructive force in this country since the early 60s.

But his real failing was to let this young woman suffer and die without, apparently, any effort to extricate her from the unfortunate position he put her in.

I can accept people make mistakes. Hell, I've made a couple myself. But if we want to be forgiven for them, there must be some atonement and an admission of responsibility. We never got that from Teddy.
