Yes, it would. It was the biggest cancer. It wasn't the birthplace of CDSs but it was where the bulk ended. Plus it was the largest commercial insurer in the world... it would have brought down the entire commercial insurance market with it's tentacles.

I know there is an anti-Goldman bias; well deserved. They profited from this mess. But their crime is being the smartest of the sleaze "financial institutions". GS would have survived... in fact without the bailouts, eventually they may have dominated more than you or I would have wanted.

If you hold your nose I think it was handled perfectly. Some bad guys benefited... but we still had an economy. You could have punished those guys, but you would have punished 100 million other people in the process.

Pragmatism has it's downsides.
