If you want a slow trip without a lot of cruise directors telling you about phony activities, take the Alaska State Ferry out of Bellingham. You have to reserve a stateroom well in advance unless you want to camp out with a tent in the solarium or sleep in the lounge. A stateroom is approximately the size of a closet.

It's transportation, not a cruise ship. But I really do prefer it, having experienced one cruise to Nassau. Too much direction for my taste, and I suspect you might be similar.

There's good fishing out of almost every port in Alaska, so take your pick. I've fished out of Juneau and Petersburg. Both were good.

Take the White Pass Railroad out of Skagway up to Lake Bennett. It's really quite exciting, but if your wife is skittish about going over bridges, forget it. My BIL is a B-52 pilot and he got nervous on this train.
