Many private hospitals belong to chains, or various organizations. Here is an example - they own 122 hospitals:

I really don't know all that much about how hospitals negotiate with suppliers. I sat on the Medical Board of one hospital for many years, and served on their Pharmacy committee... but all I know is that from time to time they would get better deals on some medications rather than others. It was one of our responsibilities to review and approve the so called "therapeutic substitutions", which means a policy of automatically changing prescribed medications for very similar ones, which the hospital could obtain at a lower cost.

Recall that Medicare reimbursements generally come as a package deal - the so called DRG's. The hospital gets paid for the entire admission, without breaking down the costs into elements. Meds are covered as part of the package.
