There has been extensive informal gold mining and small mine operations, which have become more active as the world economy has tanked. Existing large mines do not seem to have increased production -

So maybe the shorts are counting on the small miners, and maybe people selling gold to pay the mortgage.

Also, the FED has been reducing some of the excess liquidity, and this could affect metal prices.
