Hello vinod,

I too greatly appreciate the TA that you provide on this list. I've learned a lot about what I *don't* know and understand by reading many of your posts.

There are a couple of areas that I'm not sure I agree with you ... but I'm willing to think openly about.

1. The corporate jet. Novell has had one for years. It provides many benefits for those who use it (I haven't been on it once since I've been back at Novell ... I fly Delta most of the time) including the fact that Delta just dropped it's dinner time return to Provo. Now I have to leave at 4:00pm PST to get out of CA and get home. For those people who have last minute travel the tickets on Delta are quite costly also ... I'll touch on the general Provo-San Jose travel in number 3.

2. The Hummer. Can you please provide us all the details of the assumed "purchase" of the Hummer? I have posted here numerous times explaining that the Hummer was *not* purchased. I have been told this numerous times by our marketing folks, and I know of one product roll-out that I participated in where a Hummer was rented for the event. You insist on using this as a *major* issue with you. If you have information that it was purchased, can you please provide it to us all?

3. You seem to have this incredible belief in the myths of Silicon Valley ... the promised land of technical success? I've lived there twice and founded two start-ups there ... I don't see it! Obviously Bill Gates doesn't either ...

I still visit often and have many friends in high-tech in the valley, but I believe that it has evolved into a fast-lane, job-jumping environment. Very tactical ...

You say:

> What really bothers me about this company is that they are
> retaining two head offices. Silicon Valley is the best choice as
> that is where labour is plentiful so why keep Provo?

I'm not sure that I agree with the quick assumption that:

plentiful labour == success

> The scenic mountains is no reason to keep two facilities.

No, but they have made it easier to attract good talent that has no interest in many of the lesser sides of the valley ... having lived there I can say that I don't need the crowds, the commute, the pollution, the crime, the expensive housing ... and on ... and on.

> Postcards of Utah on ones desk are cheaper than paying rent and
> taxes.

Could you please compare/contrast the rents in Silicon Valley vs. Provo ... and also the taxes? I'm not sure that I had things as good when I lived in the valley.

I *can* be convinced though ...
