You spend a lot of time clearing undergrowth (but some undergrowth is important), and cutting fire breaks, and having controlled burns. It's both a science and something as old as people first walking around and figuring things out. A regular chore in central Alabama is keeping up the fire breaks... which really is a great excuse to ride the tractor through the woods. over seasons, leaves and such get so deep that they are perfect ovens of hot spots if a fire catches. and really how many briars and scrub pines that won't never grow up to take over the big trees do you need? they just set the stage for a firestorm, rather than a quietish burn.
