Even if SGI stops using MIPS cpus in their systems, why should they dump a small chip design company which has no expenses building fab plants and owns the rights to the largest RISC, and one of the largest embedded, architectures?

Surely MTI can continue to be an excellent source of revenue and profit?
MTI can also help design the custom ASICS that power SGI's graphics systems - the O2 uses custom versions of the R3000 for some graphics functions as well as the R5000/R10000 CPU.

Besides, Merced is vapourware - available 1999 at the earliest. The processor under development (r12000) is needed now. So if it is canceled, what does SGI do during 1998? Transition to Pentium Pro/Pentium-II now and then move again to Merced in 1999?
When will good C/C++ and Fortran compilers be available for Merced? 2000? 2001?

If SGI isn't going to succeed at the low-end, why do you want them to sell off Cray? They own a huge share of the supercomputer market through Cray. They will want all those Cray customers to buy SN1 machines in the near future.

Besides, I doubt the govt would like Cray being sold to any non-US firm.

People said that buying MTI was a mistake. Look at where the MIPS architecture is now. Give the SGI/Cray relationship a couple of years.

PS: I glad the company isn't for sale. I am still worried about the NT box replacing the O2, thus reducing the market for IRIX application software. I would much prefer a sub-$5000 IRIX/MIPS box.
