Pathetic. I can understand living like that in Mexico or Brazil where the rich are kidnapped by the druggies/bad guys for money but in suburban Tampa.....give me a break.

Yeah it's nuts. It's not like people can't get through the gates or over the walls, so it's false security. My doors are NEVER locked... except when we go on vacation. Never been robbed (knock on wood). Our worst crimes are vandalism... and that's the local kids, what's the point of locking the little bastards in?

I suspect what you have is a lot of wingers like Dave in your area who are paranoid as hell. They can't get control over their inner fears so they try to control the environment around them. All security measures are more psychological in their benefit then the reality; to whit, the wealthy FLA couple who adopted all those kids. They had an extensive security system on their house. Their murderers were able to breach the system through an inside job. The latest craze is getting a gun.....resulting in more and more accidental shootings. Instead of dealing with the real issue of crime, we come up with all these faux solutions.
