The term grew from the South, and generally recognized as such. In fact most people don't recognize the most stupid northerner as a redneck. So while they may have called those Scottish religious zealots rednecks for a while, it apparently died out. But this has nothing to do with my point, which is that it is a term for a white person and thus racial in context. Unless Scots are of some race I am not aware of? Is red hair and freckles a whole nother race?
