I believe that many people improperly planned to live off social security which was meant to be a supplement income in retirement. Others unfortunately found themselves in a position of only having SSI in retirement.

Having them purchase private insurance would cost them between 25% to nearly all of their SSI income in many cases. Since they are the most costly individuals in the pool, the payments for private insurance would be the highest.

I don't believe in subsidizing anyone with tax dollars, however, I didn't cause this mess and see no simple way out of it.

I believe one way to combat fraud in SSI would be to disallow any payments outside of this country. Many people retire to other countries and live to be well over 100 years...if you want to believe they are alive. They should have had a larger unit that does nothing but find fraud in the system. It would more than pay for itself.

Many small business immigrants pay fake wages and SSI payments to family members who come to the states, get a tax ID number and go back to India or wherever. Then after they have sufficient quarters come back to the states apply for SSI and return to their country of residence.
