Thought this was interesting, after running the Windows Defender scan (it found nothing), I ran the MalwareBytes scan. It came up with four spyware items and some questionable cookie-type items. (I hadn't run that scan in awhile). Once those were removed the laptop seems to be running faster again. I'll leave Defender on for now, but it seems to be superfluous, at this point.
