the ex-pat communities i understand, is growing faster than ever.
i have some ideas about that, but that's another subject. learning a language makes it more appealing, i have had serious considerations about spending a year in italy, learning the language and maybe some cooking as well....
my mother learnt to speak german at age 54... there were other reasons, but nevertheless, she learned her third language.
in the larger latin american cities, most everyone knows how to speak english... but you will never get to know the community unless the local language is spoken.... i think it is a matter of making the initial effort to actually learn it... after that, i believe it makes it all more fun.
at this point, since the US has taken a conscious decision (or at least it seems that way) to become a banana republic... in practical terms, one is better off living in a REAL banana republic than in a pretend to be one... the reason is simple... here they have a well oiled police force that basically, unless you are at the very high levels of power, attempting to bribe them is like playing russian roulette, so you have to live in fear of these gorillas with uniforms...
whereas in a plain vanilla banana republic, bribing people at all levels is far easier... still and art, but much less risk, as most everyone does it....
anyway... an interesting thought that i am personally considering very seriously.... and yes, i have some advantages that makes it easier...
edit:
p.s. age is a matter of mind power (unless you intend to bungee jump, or serious health considerations are in play...) attitude is more important... and no, i do not mean to have the attitude of the obnoxious fifty something harley davidson ex-hippie -lol
i was never a hippie, and i hate harleys... oops |
