Well, I'm pretty hopeful about US society -

Machines for war is part of the mainstream history of warfare.

Helpers ? If someone has an education, why should they do this ?
How are the infirm going to pay for these helpers ?

Mercenaries are more problematic, we can look at the British empire's use of Hessians (only fair) and later Gurkhas (generally successful), mixed results from the French Foreign Legion (generally bad long term because of abuses) and UN troops in various locations (mixed, with horrible results in former Yugoslavia, moderate to good results in West Africa)

The US needs to reduce and re-think the "Empire" we are running.

We still have military bases that protect West Germany from East German aggression.
We are still spending money to protect capitalism in East Asia...
