Retirees that start collecting SS at 62 instead of at regular retirement age or later help the long term health of the SS trust fund. The net present value of SS payments, if you start collecting at 62, is lower than if you start collecting when you are older. The NPV of SS benefits increases all the way to age 70, which is the age at which most people of average health should start collecting -- provided, of course, they have enough savings to wait until then.
