He wouldn't talk about his experience on D-Day for over 50 years. It was only after he started networking with living members of his regiment a dozen years ago that he opened up. His boat got stuck on a pole ten feet deep and they had to jump out and swim in. A few drowned because they didn't take their backpacks off. They had heavy rain with thunder and lightning, in addition to being shot at as they swam to shore. He says Saving Private Ryan captured the scene on the beach pretty accurately. It was total chaos.
