I think that captures the essence of the disconnect. Folks are conflating their humanitarian instincts and their budgeting instincts. The former is worthy, the latter is cognitively deficient. It's called wishful thinking. I respect someone who says that it's the humane thing to do so costs be damned. Someone whose humanitarian instincts have shorted out his reasoning, not so much.
