The Vancouver market is an auction market, so the spread doesn't mean what it does with the Nasdaq. My broker does go through a market-maker, they tell me, so there is still a spread, but it isn't necessarily what it looks like when you see or are told the bid and ask. I've put my order in to buy at much lower than the ask and had it filled. Since I put in "all or nothing" to avoid large commission costs per share, these orders sometimes don't get filled because those selling aren't selling as many as I'm buying. You'll notice that a lot of the "last trade" prices are between the bid and ask, much more than happens with the Nasdaq.
