Quantum mechanics as explanation for consciousness? "Collapse of the wave function" - a fancy way of appealing to mystery and magic. Its important to try to keep track of what people are really talking about. Collapse of the wave function refers to the positions and other characteristics of quantum particles, which make up all the atoms that material things are made of. Which quantum particles wave functions collapse to create human consciousness? Or do all the wave funcitions of all the quantum particles in the matter that makes up the brain collapse their possibilities in exactly the way that consciousness is formed? And how is consciousness created by quantum particles anyway? Why couldn't the wave functions of the quantum particles that make up a rock collapse to create a conscious rock? He could have just said mumbo-jumbo as easily but it wouldn't sound "scientific".
