I suggest that old simply means outdated, and not inaccurate.
What was correct then is correct now.
What was state of the art 10 years ago is perhaps now outdated, but not inaccurate.

The F-18 design is an relic over 30 years and hardly a match for a modern air to air missile. That goes for the F-15 and probably the F-16, too. Why do you think we export that stuff ? The trick in air combat is to shoot first with a long range weapon. If you are close enough to fire a cannon shot with a limited trajectory, you are close enough to have already been obliterated by the other guy's missile. The heroic days of individual air combat ended in WWII, or maybe Korea.
I have never heard of a dogfight where a cannon shot scored on a missile equipped plane (unless it was on the ground). After you spend your wad, you return to base for more missiles - no dogfighting. You don't know the armament situation of your adversary. Generally you never see them visually anymore.
