How could you be referring to anything else when you said "if you were..." and Ijust finished posting that I had an employee group plan? "If you were...," using the subjective, sets up a hypothetical the response to which is that if I were self employed or between jobs I wouldn't be qualified for my plan. Since you didn't know that not all insurance incurs rate increases at 50, I assumed you were generally unfamiliar with how health insurance applies to those self-employed or between jobs. [FYI, those between jobs generally qualify for insurance from COBRA and the self-employed are generally on their own.]
I would say that the increase would be substantial and much more than at age 50
This chunk of our discussion started when you posted to Brumar suggesting that all insurance must be age rated, I replied that my insurance didn't vary by age, and you implied that I was lying. As far as I am concerned, the topic on the table has been my own insurance and getting you to recognize that not all insurance is age rated. It was in that context that I replied.
Re substantial increases for those over 40, dunno. I have no experience with health insurance other than my own and am not qualified to write authoritatively about it.
I will add one comment, though, that I think is relevant. I chose my health insurance to the extent that I stuck with an employer that paid me considerably less than I could have earned elsewhere, not to mention forgoing the use of a company car :/, because I preferred the long-term benefits. Smart, responsible people think long term and plan for the future. Do I have sympathy for people who made different choices and are are being penalized, sure. I even have sympathy for those who were grasshoppers rather than ants and are now paying for it. But I think that the answer to that is fostering education and responsibility, not making the less thoughtful and responsible the poster children for health care "reform" and designing a system around them. Those incentives are societal negatives. We have welfare systems for those who fall through the cracks. It is suicidal to make negative behaviors normative.
