This is Socialism 101: it's too easy for good people to rationalize putting their feet up and letting others carry the load when that becomes a legal and acceptable societal norm

This is the debacle with the current system of unemployment compensation. In the state I'm in a person can take home $409/week for almost 2 years. If that person takes a part-time job flipping burgers for $200/wk, he gets $209/week from unemployment. There isn't the SLIGHTEST motivation to get this guy off the unemployment dole. (I use this example because I recently had a conversation with someone who is in precisely this situation). The incentive to work is gone for many.

Before the Gingrich/Clinton welfare reform, it was computed that a person would have to make $15/hour to make it worthwhile to go to work -- given the freebies like foodstamps, Medicaid, earned income credit, the taxes on going to work, and all the others.

This is the thing about the coming health care legislation. To my knowledge, there continues to be no reasonable way to sort out the truly needy from those who just want to get all they can get.
