I just think it has become self-evident.

The appearance of self-evidence can be a function of selective perception. Perceiving that others want what we want is common. It's self-reinforcing because we mostly hang with folks like us and over-generalize. I don't think there's any way to make that call--it's presumptuous and too vulnerable to misperception.

Personally, I don't think the American people have a clue what they want in the way of health care change. The wing-nuts do, but that's only because wing-nuttery is inherently so simplistic.

Today's Post has an op-ed by George McGovern. He thinks he knows what the American people want, too--Medicare for all. You can't both be right.

Edit:

A friend with whom I had lunch today told me an anecdote about someone she knows who bought health insurance for his recent-graduate kids--Blue Cross. His daughter lived in a nearby city, was diagnosed with cancer, lost her job, and moved home for her treatment. Now Blue Cross doesn't want to pay because she lives in a different Blue Cross territory.

Even smart people, upon hearing stories like that, can readily make the huge leap to "ergo we must pass this reform bill" rather than focusing on fixing the discrete problem involved. Socialism isn't on their mind, only that this poor girl is being wronged and something needs to be done.
