A diet low in refined carbohydrates and sugars is why fad diets like Atkins reduce body fat and lower cholesterol.

Lots of carbs and sugar is what's missing from the Mediterranean diet, which is also popular.

If I switch to a diet with lots of carbs and sugar I can send my Triglycerides skyrocketing within days and show a large increase in Cholesterol and LDL withing a few months. And once I start, carbs and sugar become addictive. Oh, and did I mention I can start to need bigger pants when I eat lots of carbs and sugar?

Have you ever noticed that almost all bakers are fat. It's not because they're eating butter and steaks.
