They could call for his ilk to not be rewarded with prestigious university positions. Institutions like the NAS and AAAS could condemn them.

<No, to mainstream folks they (Dawkins, Shermer, Ruse, ...) are the real voice of science, not the real scientists writing in journals that no one but a small clique reads. So its appropriate to say society and the media place them on a pedestal.>

1.) That's silly 90% of the population (or more) never heard of Dawkins. He's on u-Tube, but his appearences on talkshows is dwarfed by almost every other guest.
2.) Who cares? I thought we established the media is a bunch of crap.

I don't know what percentage of the population have heard of folks like Dawkins but its much more than have heard of the journals you mention where "real science" is published. There is a market for things like Discover magazine and similar publications and they consider folks like Dawkins the real voices of science.

-------------------------------------

<I know which I see in the science section when I go into Barnes & Noble. >

Book stores are for adults. The fact is you are villifying Dawkins, etc. who are atheists and think they have something to say about atheism (which is probably just falsifying the real 'wacko' forms of god put forward by bible thumpers... which is FINE BY ME) and religion and god... BUT when millions of kids are being taught the world is made in seven days by a guy with a white beard... "Oh, no problem"!!

Virtually all kids have been taught evolution in schools for the past century.

Oh COMMON! People believe what they grow up learning...
Well I know the Catholic church hasn't taught a 6000 year old earth and creation in 7 24 hour days but I know lots of Catholics who believe it anyway.

----------------------------
BUT this stuff is taught in churches, religion classes, AND peddled as science ("creationsim science"-sells videos and all sorts of stuff to homeschool groups) to ignorant people all over the country.

I grew up in a Baptist church and I heard the subject mentioned in church exactly one time and that was by the most conservative guy I knew - a true bible literalist. And he said the schools should leave the origins (of the world, life, species) as an unknown, the mechanisms of how God did it left as a mystery.

Which sells more... this stuff or Dawkins?

Probably Dawkins.
