There is little difference in wages between non-union and union auto plants - thats been posted about on this thread by myself and others. The big differences is the non-union companies don't have to deal with productivity hurting union work rules, the non-union don't have a 30 year retirement policy, and have fewer retirees to pay for.

... the progressive anti-unionism of the transplants. It consists of one factor: They pay well. Workers not only make far more than the prevailing wage in the rural areas where most plants are located but also considerably more than every state's average wage. With overtime, they can earn $70,000 or more a year at some plants. Average pay and benefits: roughly $45 an hour.
.....
The UAW's problem is that it has little to offer. High pay? The workers have that. "If you're making $50 an hour, what do you need a UNION for?" says Randle. Job security? Workers tend to rate a successful company as a better security bet than a UNION whose members are losing jobs by the tens of thousands. A voice on the assembly line? Transplant workers have that, just not through a third-party like the UAW.

That $45 bucks is only a few bucks lower than the average compensation at Detroit plants.

Rich wrote about this in his book "what is wrong with kansas" i.e. people voting against their own interests.

You want to hear about voting against your interests - the group who does that most are black voters who vote for Democrats who ruin their neighborhoods and schools, prevent school voucher and choice programs that most blacks favor, that favor illegal immigration which takes jobs away. Most blacks are for school vouchers and against illegal immigration but they vote for a party which opposes their interests in these issues.
