About the public option -- I think the model for it is Roosevelt's TVA - Tennessee Valley Authority. The big new thing in those days was electricity, utilities. Roosevelt decided that electrification was too important to be left in the hands of greedy businesspeople and their investors. TVA was created to "compete" with private companies. TVA enjoyed practically unlimited financial and political support from the government, and of course it was very "successful" in "competing" against private businesses.

Public option can be much cheaper than commercial insurance ONLY if it is subsidized, which is not exactly "competition". If it will be means tested, than it will be merely an expansion of Medicaid (which can be accomplished with much less noise). In my estimation, if the public option will NOT be subsidized, private companies will hand it its a$$ on a platter.
