How is the current approach working out?

What is the moral basis for ruining hundreds of thousands of lives every year over this?

Nit picking questionable statistics is a way of avoiding these questions. And no one ever claimed legalization would solve the drug problem, that's a straw man. In fact these articles typically disavow that claim prominently.

I am making this reply to you rather than Brumar. I like Brumar, I probably recommend more of his posts than any except yourself and Nadine. Hi Brumar. We've had this conversation more than once and I really don't want to have it again. I know, I know, I kind of started it.

I had a longer post in mind, backing out arrests for possession only to make the stats comparable, pointing out that pot does not by it's nature foster aggressive anti-social behavior (unlike alcohol), etc, etc, etc, but it's all been said before by better writers than me.
